Happiest country in the world

In this post, I’ll share one of my favourite work projects, some highlights from recent studies, and a few thoughts about life in Finland.

Work Project

My favourite project at work (while many things were also fun to do) was the photographing of new items. It was fun to decide a good angle for each photo and have a proper lighting. Editing the photographs with Adobe Photoshop was also enjoyable. I removed the backgrounds and replaced them with white. The photographs also often needed cropping and resizing. I did this (like most of the things at work) alone. It was challenging to find the best photograph from all the ones taken, as I needed only one good shot per angle. During this work task I learned to be faster in editing the photographs as I gained experience. At home my favourite project was to feed and take care of my guinea pigs.

Studies

Last weeks in ECIP Reading & Oral Skills (English) we learned how to manage a project and how to do a simple user story about a web page or an app (where and for what somebody would need the app or web page). We also had a quiz and practised skimming. For the skimming I chose the article "Think Java: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist by Downey, A.B. & Mayfield, C. (2020) O'Reilly Medi, Inc.". Think Java is an introduction to computer science and programming intended for readers with little or no experience. The book presents each new idea in a logical progression. Each chapter is 12–14 pages and covers the material for one week of a college course. The book begins with small problems and basic algorithms and works up to object-oriented design. You can find a link to this e-book in the sources below.

Last weeks in Introduction to Computer Science we had the last lesson, it was about Professionalism. We learned about the labor market situation in computer science and professional ethics — for example, the ethical issues related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. We had an online exam about Professionalism. Also we had to write an abstract of two real-life cases where information systems, software, or information technology have been designed in some unethical way.

Last weeks in Devices and Data Networks we were educated about computer memory, I/O devices and storage. I remember that ROM means Read Only Memory (content is preserved through power outages) and RAM means Random Access Memory (content is not preserved when the power goes out). We also had a micro exam online about basic functions of a computer. We learned about data networks. What kind of data networks, protocols and infrastructures there are. There was also a few things about Client/Server relationship and data packages, how are they transferred and on what.

Personal Reflections

I have really bad acrophobia (fear of heights), I cannot even go to the second floor of our school without having really bad anxiety. When I studied mathematics it was horrible for me to go to the third floor (where the after class lessons were held) and try to concentrate on studying while feeling really uneasy the whole time I was there. The anxiety was a little bit better in an area with small windows so I could not see how far up I was but it still felt bad as I knew I was in a high place.

Factors Contributing to Happiness
The rankings are based on various factors, including:
Social Support: Strong community ties and support systems.
GDP per Capita: Economic stability and wealth distribution.
Healthy Life Expectancy: Access to healthcare and overall well-being.
Freedom to Make Life Choices: Personal autonomy and decision-making freedom.
Generosity: Willingness to help others and contribute to society.
Perceptions of Corruption: Trust in government and institutions.

Finland's consistent top position is attributed to its strong welfare system, low levels of corruption, and a culture that values community and nature. The country also benefits from high levels of trust among its citizens and a balanced lifestyle that promotes well-being.

In summary, Finland remains the happiest country in the world for 2025, followed closely by other Nordic nations, reflecting a trend of high happiness levels in this region.

It is great to see Finland to be the happiest country in the world. Through my studies, work, free time and hobbies, I have learned that happiness often comes from moments with your close ones and pets. How about you — what brings you happiness or motivation in your daily life? I’d like to have your thoughts in the comments!
